The Arts 4 Home Schoolers program began in early 2009 when a home school mom, Stephanie Shannon, approached Tony Marino at Stage Right with the idea of starting a class for home schooled students. Her daughter had expressed a desire to be in a musical her senior year so she could participate in the Night of the Stars. So Stephanie, with the typical determination of a home school mom, began to explore options to make that dream a reality. Stage Right jumped at the opportunity and that spring offered their first ever home schooled workshops.
The interest in the program led to two groups of students rehearsing for, what was for many, their first experience in live theater. There was a group of pre-teens who rehearsed weekly to present Peter Pan for their first performance and the teens worked to present Bye-Bye Birdie and home schoolers were able, for the first time, to participate in The Night of the Stars event at the Palace Theater with other local high school students.
The Fall Semester resulted in a combined teen/pre-teen performance of Annie and the stage was set for the future of the A4HS program. The children have offered individual spring shows and combined fall shows ever since. It is awesome to watch as each year the children learn and grow and new leaders and stars emerge!
There has been a succession of parents coordinating with Stage Right and communicating with parents since Stephanie first led the group. In 2015 as the group faced the loss of its 3rd coordinator and growing numbers of children participating; it was decided that it was too big a job for 1 person to manage alone despite increasing levels of participation from the parents. A committee was formed to coordinate the various groups of volunteers and communications necessary to keep the program moving forward. This website and the new Facebook page are a result of those efforts.
